Fernand Chapouthier

Fernand Chapouthier (born October 14, 1899 in Bordeaux , † December 12, 1953 in Paris ) was a French classical philologist and classical archaeologist .

biography

After graduating from high school in Bordeaux, he began studying with his twin brother Paul in 1918 at the École normal supérieure in Paris. Here he met Pierre Demargne and Robert Flacelière . In 1922 he became a member of the École française d'Athènes , where he met Henri Seyrig . He taught at the universities of Dijon (1929–1931) and Bordeaux (1931–1937) and after his habilitation in 1936 with his thesis “Les Dioscures au service d'une déesse” at the Sorbonne (1937–1953). Here he became a professor of literature and Greek civilization in 1941. In 1948 he was appointed deputy director of the École normal supérieure.

Fernand Chapouthier worked in two areas. He was a connoisseur of the works of Euripides and worked as an archaeologist on the island of Crete . After his excavations on Samothrace he took part in the exploration of the palace of Malia .

Two streets in Heraklion and Malia are named after him. He was married to Odette Mazaubert (1913-1994), who was known as "Carquelin" for her writings in Saintongeais . They had two children, including the biologist and philosopher Georges Chapouthier .
