August Christian Wilhelm Gimmerthal (* 1774 in Jecha near Sondershausen ; † February 21, 1840 ) was a German educator.

Life

August Christian Wilhelm Gimmerthal was the son of Wilhelm Immanuel Christoph Gimmerthal, pastor in Jecha. His brother was Benjamin Christoph Gimmerthal (born October 10, 1769 in Clingen ; † April 3, 1837), consistorial councilor and pastor in Greußen.

He attended the town and country school in Sondershausen with the rectors Gottfried Konrad Böttger (1731–1794) and Gottschalk. In 1795 he began studying theology at the University of Jena , where he also studied ancient languages ​​and philology. After completing his studies, he received a position as a private tutor in Jena and was able to continue to use the further training opportunities in the university town. After finishing his activity as a private tutor he returned to Jecha and gave private lessons there.

In 1803 the position of vice principal at the school in Sondershausen became vacant and August Christian Wilhelm Gimmerthal succeeded the deceased principal Gottschalk. After the town and country school was converted into a humanistic grammar school on May 4, 1829 , he was given the position of the school's oldest professor. In 1835 a class of the grammar school was set up as a "real class" and, in addition to his professorship, he received the directorate of the real class and the community schools in Sondershausen until he asked for health reasons in 1836 to retire. His successor was Friedrich Hölzer.

Shortly after retiring, he went blind, regained his eyesight after an operation, but died shortly afterwards.

Works

August Christian Wilhelm Gimmerthal founded the weekly political newspaper “ Der Teutsche. Political magazine for all classes ”. The publisher was Carl Fleck, the publisher, he himself was the editor of the newspaper.
