Benjamin Christoph Gimmerthal (born October 10, 1769 in Clingen , † April 8, 1837 in Greußen ) was a German Protestant clergyman.

Life

Benjamin Christoph Gimmerthal was the son of Wilhelm Immanuel Christoph Gimmerthal, cantor and school teacher in Clingen, who later became a preacher in Jecha near Sondershausen . His brother was the educator August Christian Wilhelm Gimmerthal . He grew up in the house of his grandmother and one of his maternal aunties after his mother, a daughter of the bailiff in Clingen, died shortly after his birth.

He attended the boys' school in Clingen from 1787 to 1787 and in 1781, at the age of twelve, went to the city ​​school in Greußen. In 1787 he began to study theology at the University of Jena and heard lectures from Johann Christoph Döderlein , Johann Gottfried Eichhorn , Johann Jakob Griesbach , Johann August Heinrich Ulrich and Christian Gottfried Schütz . In 1789 he went to the University of Göttingen to deepen his knowledge, where he heard lectures from Heinrich Ludwig Planck , Georg Christoph Lichtenberg and Christian Gottlob Heyne . After completing his academic studies, he returned to Clingen and, after passing his exam, was accepted as a theology candidate.

He went to Sondershausen and gave private lessons for a few years, in 1793 he was tutor in the family of the privy councilor Ludwig Wilhelm Adolf von Weise . During this time he worked out sermons, which he also delivered publicly.

After the death of the deacon Ephraim Heinrich Törpe, he received the third preaching position at the church in Sondershausen in 1799, after the election of the magistrate and the citizenship had fallen almost unanimously. He was ordained on October 13, 1799 . The election was later the Prince Günther Friedrich Carl I. confirmed. In 1805 he was appointed pastor to Greussen, where he was also responsible for school supervision in the city. On December 29, 1823 Prince Günther Friedrich Carl I gave him the title of consistorial councilor .

Benjamin Christoph von Gimmerthal was married to Sophie Juliane Wilhelmine (born March 17, 1755 in Großrudestedt ; † unknown), the eldest daughter of the former pastor Hippolytus August Christian Wipprecht (1739-1810) in Großenfurre , since 1801 . They had six children together, but only two of them survived. His wife also died before him.
