August Friedrich Hofmann

August Friedrich Hofmann (born September 14, 1824 in Karlsruhe , † September 30, 1901 ibid) was a lieutenant colonel in Baden, later a royal Prussian lieutenant general and finally commander of the 17th infantry brigade.

His parents were the businessman August Hofmann († September 4, 1845) and his wife Wilhelmine Bohm († January 14, 1878).

Life

He received training at the Polytechnic in Karlsruhe and came on April 9, 1842 as a musketeer in the Baden infantry regiment. There he was promoted to NCO on October 19, 1842, on September 9, 1844 to Portepeefähnrich and on March 4, 1845 to Lieutenant. From March 19, 1847 to August 4, 1847 he was posted to the pioneer company. There he was promoted to first lieutenant on April 14, 1848. In 1848 he took part in the first Schleswig War . From July 31 to October 1, 1849, he was posted to the Prussian headquarters in Rastatt. On March 4, 1850, he returned to the pioneer company. From November 1st, 1850 to March 31st, 1851 he was assigned to the provisional administration of the fortress construction in the federal fortress of Rastatt. Then he came on November 2, 1852 as a teacher at the Kadettenhaus in Karlsruhe. From December 21, 1856 to January 21, 1857, he was posted to Constance with a special assignment. He received the character of captain on May 13, 1857 and on October 23, 1857 he received his patent and was transferred to the cadet house as a teacher. From there he came on January 15, 1859 as a commander in the Baden pioneer company, but on October 4, 1859 he was already in the artillery regiment. On October 25, 1859, he was posted to the elementary school for officers as a teacher for four months. On October 8, 1861, he came to the field artillery regiment and as a teacher at the higher officers' school. On February 4, 1864 he became battery commander in the fortress artillery battalion, on October 24, 1864 he was again battery commander and was released from his position as a teacher. During the German War of 1866 he fought against Prussia. Promoted to major on October 26, 1867, at the same time he was commander of the pioneer division in Rastatt. On April 12, 1870, he rose to lieutenant colonel and was appointed battalion commander of the Baden 1st Leib Grenadier Regiment. During the Franco-Prussian War he fought at the siege of Strasbourg as well as the Lisaine and the battles at Selz, Bruyeres, Dijon, Dougeot and Pasques. He was wounded at Nuits. For the campaign he received the Iron Cross 2nd Class and 1st Class and the Knight's Cross of the Karl Friedrich Military Order of Merit .

After the establishment of the German Empire , the Baden Army was also integrated. On July 15, 1871, he transferred to the Prussian Army as a lieutenant colonel with a patent on August 1, 1870, and from there to Grenadier Regiment No. 10 . From August 3 to October 2, 1871, he became the leader of the 1st Battalion of the Grenadier Regiment and was assigned there on February 10, 1872. Shortly afterwards, on February 19, 1872, he became commander of the 1st Battalion, but on June 11, 1872, he was appointed commander of the 63rd Infantry Regiment. There he was promoted to colonel on March 22, 1873. On April 18, 1878, he joined the army officers as major general, but on March 3, 1878, he became the commander of the 17th Infantry Brigade. He was put up for retirement on October 16, 1879 , and received the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd class . On September 16, 1886 he was given the character of Lieutenant General.

He died in Karlsruhe on September 30, 1901.

Hofmann married Josepha Birnstiel widowed von Beck on June 30, 1864 in Karlsruhe (* March 18, 1827, † May 17, 1904). His wife brought three stepchildren into the marriage. The couple also had a son:
