Life

August Hudler was born on December 12, 1868 in Odelzhausen, Bavaria. He received his first artistic training at the Munich Art Academy with Wilhelm von Rümann . His first work, a boyish archer , was created in his master's studio. He later created his first life-size reaper figure . Lung diseases shaped his further life. In the meantime he moved to Dresden in 1900 and continued to make his models in bronze . The Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden acquired several works from him. When he could not work in the studio, he designed a large number of busts, figures and other artistic designs, such as for the Hamburg Bismarck monument . Together with the sculptor Schumacher, the stairwell of the Dresden Technical University was decorated with busts of professors. For health reasons, he was unable to accept the appointment of the Dresden Art Academy to head the modeling class. As his last work he created a sensual figure of Christ, a life-sized and sunken Jesus with a crown of thorns . The Dresden Academic Council unanimously liked this sculpture and so it was purchased for the Christ Church in Dresden-Strehlen . His health worsened and he died on November 22nd, 1905. He was buried in Dresden.
