August Walter Köhler (born September 13, 1858 in Eltville am Rhein , † January 19, 1902 in Lomé ) was a German official in the Reich Colonial Office and first governor of the German colony of Togo .

Life

Köhler began his career in the colonial administration in 1891 as a government assessor in the colonial department of the Foreign Office . On November 18, 1895, he replaced Jesko von Puttkamer as Imperial Commissioner and Governor of Togoland. In this position he worked in Aného until the capital was moved to Lomé in 1897. Because of the steadily growing importance of the colony, his office received the official designation of a governor of Togoland in 1898.

During his tenure, August Köhler commissioned the construction of the governor's palace in Lomé , which is still one of the city's special sights.

Köhler died during his tenure in 1902 and is the only governor to be buried in the main cemetery in the former Togo colony in Lomé. His successor in office was Waldemar Horn .

Since his studies (summer 1879), Köhler was a member of the Leipzig University Choir of St. Pauli (today the German Choir ).
