August King

Georg August König (born May 12, 1844 in Willstätt , † January 14, 1913 in Philadelphia ) was a German professor of mining , chemistry , geology , metallurgy and mineralogy .

Life

August König studied mechanical engineering at the Polytechnic in Karlsruhe and became a member of the Teutonia fraternity . He then studied in Heidelberg and Berlin , where he received his doctorate in 1867. A year later, König moved to the USA and worked there in various chemical companies .

In 1874, König became assistant professor of chemistry and mineralogy at the University of Pennsylvania . In 1879 he became professor of geology and mining, and 7 years later professor of mineralogy and metallurgy. During this time he largely expanded the Institute for Mining and Metallurgy.

König made many publications and was active on several commissions. Furthermore, he discovered and named a variety of minerals . And he developed a variety of methods for chemical analysis, for laboratory equipment and for chemical and metallurgical processes.
