He attended St. Anna School without receiving any special musical training here. His earliest music lessons in harmony were given to him by the conductor Josef Strebinger. He later received instruction in composition from the Viennese composer Josef Hellmesberger senior and Professor Joseph Mayseder . After his father's untimely death in 1843, August conducted his father's orchestra at the age of eight in the “Bräuhausgarten in Fünfhaus” in front of around 2,000 visitors. He made his debut in 1853 but only lived two years when he died of lung disease at the age of twenty. In his short career August Lanner composed around 30 dance pieces.
