August Lohr

August Lohr (also Löhr, born August 26, 1842 in Hallein ; † February 4, 1920 in Mexico City , Mexico ) was an Austrian landscape and panorama painter who worked in the United States and Mexico.

Born as the son of a soap boiler, Lohr studied painting from October 30, 1862 in the class of antiquities at the Royal Academy of Arts in Munich with Carl Theodor von Piloty .

In Munich he worked as a freelance landscape painter. From 1879 to 1881 Lohr helped the Munich art professor Louis Braun to create the panorama picture of the Battle of Sedan as well as two other battle panoramas .

In April 1885 August Lohr came to America on board the steamship “Fulda” together with Hermann Michalowski and Franz Rohrbeck from Berlin and Friedrich Wilhelm Heine and Bernhard Schneider from Dresden . Together with William Wehner, Löhr founded the American Panorama Co. with headquarters in Milwaukee , which commissioned the artists to paint at least seven panorama pictures.

Lohr also supervised the installation of a German panorama in New Orleans .

From 1887 to 1890 Lohr ran the Lohr & Heine company with Friedrich Wilhelm Heine, which took over Wells Street Studio from the American Panorama Company.

Around 1890 Lohr came to Mexico, where he created many landscape paintings. In 1899 Lohr showed his works in San Francisco , then came back to Mexico.
