Johan August Malmström (born October 14, 1829 in the municipality of Motala in Östergötland , † October 18, 1901 in Stockholm ) was a Swedish symbolist painter and professor at the Royal Art College in Stockholm.

Life

Malmström's birthplace was the Nubbekullen farm in the parish of Västra Ny, which today houses a local museum. Both his father and grandfather were carpenters, and August initially helped them decorate the nearby churches. It was not until he was 21 that he had the opportunity to travel to Stockholm, where he was a student at the art school from 1849 to 1856. In 1856 he moved to Düsseldorf and in the following year he received the Royal Medal and a travel grant for the pictures he sent to Sweden. He then moved to Paris , but in 1858 he returned to Düsseldorf to complete the picture Vikings on the beach with the Norwegian painter Hans Fredrik Gude . Then Malmström went back to Paris, where he was a student of Thomas Couture , who had a great influence on Malmström with his painting style. From 1859 to 1860 and 1863 Malmström went on study trips to Italy . In 1864 Malmström returned to Stockholm, where he became a member of the art academy and in 1867 took over a professorship at this institution.

In addition to his paintings, Malmström devoted himself increasingly to illustrations. In 1868 he created drawings for Esaias Tegnérs Fritjofs saga and in 1888 fourteen oil paintings for a new edition of the poem. In 1880, Sagan om Ragnar Lodbrok och hans söner by Peter August Gödecke appeared , with illustrations by Malmström. Also Ensign steel by Johan Ludvig Runeberg were illustrated by Malmström. When Malmström died, there were 19 oil paintings and many drawings for Njål's saga . Malmström also created drawings for the newspaper Ny Illustrerad Tidning and, for example, for books by Peter Christen Asbjørnsen and Zacharias Topelius .

From 1887 to 1893 Malmström was director of the teaching facility at the art academy. In 1894 he resigned from his professorship. He has been a member of the governing committee of the Swedish Society for Prehistory (Fornminnesförening) since the establishment was founded in 1869.
