Carl August Mittelsten Scheid (born April 25, 1871 in Barmen (now part of Wuppertal ), † February 25, 1955 ) was a German entrepreneur.

Life

Head of the Vorwerk companies

August Mittelsten Scheid was born in 1871 as the son of Emil Mittelsten Scheid and his wife Emilie, née Schniewind. In the Wuppertal district of Wichlinghausen , his family, whose lineage can be traced back to the 14th century, had owned a company for Barmer articles since 1765 , which still exists today as the August Mittelsten Scheid & Sons company . From 1877 to 1886 he attended secondary school, now known as the Carl-Fuhlrott-Gymnasium . After leaving school, he began training at Colsmann & Seifert in Langenberg . He then went to England for a short time and was called to work in his grandfather's company when his plan to continue his education in the United States failed. With his help, the company was saved from liquidation , which laid the foundation for the company's history, which continues to this day.

Vorwerk company

In 1899 August Mittelsten Scheid married Mathilde Vorwerk, the daughter of Vorwerk co- founder Carl Vorwerk. Since the potential of the Barmer article industry was too low for him, he joined the management of the Vorwerk company in 1904 at the request of his father-in-law, who himself suffered a stroke and had no successor. Under his management, a wool spinning mill was acquired in 1907 - he was henceforth sole shareholder - and in 1919 two plants followed in Bavaria , where upholstery fabrics were produced. With these official acts, the business field of the Vorwerk company has already been sustainably expanded.

Aware of his public responsibility, he was active on the board of the Bergische employers' associations from 1902 and a member of the Barmen Chamber of Commerce since 1907 . In 1914 he founded the Association of Upholstery Fabrics Manufacturers in Chemnitz together with Kommerzienrat Hand Vogel , followed six months later by the Association of Carpet Manufacturers . Shortly afterwards, both associations were merged and were under the leadership of Mittelsten Scheid for 21 years. In addition, he was active in some central associations of German industry and later also in the presidium of the Reich Association of German Industry . In addition, he always worked with German institutions such as Commerzbank and Gothaer Lebensversicherung .

Under Mittelsten Scheid's leadership, the Vorwerk business area was expanded to include precision mechanics , gear manufacturing and electrical equipment manufacturing by 1926 . This was mainly made possible by the technical knowledge gained during the First World War .

Mittelsten Scheid managed the company under sole responsibility until 1936. At his own request he was supported from 1932 and 1934 by his two sons Werner Mittelsten Scheid and Erich Mittelsten Scheid . Since he always viewed himself as an oppositionist to the National Socialist regime , he finally resigned from all public offices in 1935. When his house and his company were badly damaged in the air raids on Wuppertal in 1943 , he handed over the management of the company to his two sons.

After his home was destroyed in 1943, Mittelsten Scheid and his wife Mathilde moved to Wipperfürth , where they owned a country house on a spinning mill . He died there in 1955.
