August Peters (Bishop)

August Peters (born May 27, 1931 in Kaldenkirchen ; † May 3, 1986 in Aachen ) was a German Roman Catholic clergyman and bishop .

Life

Peters graduated from high school in Mönchengladbach and was ordained a priest on March 1, 1958 in Aachen after studying philosophy and theology. From 1958 to 1963 he was chaplain in Setterich . From 1963 he was chaplain, from 1968 parish vicar and from 1971 titular pastor in Schiefbahn . In 1963 he founded the aid organization "Aktion Mission und Leprahilfe". From 1973 to 1980 he was also dean of the Willich dean's office. In 1980 he became pastor at the Liebfrauen parish church in Krefeld. On April 6, 1981 he was appointed titular bishop of Aquae Sirenses and auxiliary bishop in the diocese of Aachen by Pope John Paul II . On May 9, 1981 he was ordained bishop by Klaus Hemmerle in Aachen Cathedral . From 1983 he was also the resident cathedral chapter in Aachen.

Peters died on May 3, 1986 after a long illness of colon cancer and was buried on May 9, 1986 in the bishop's crypt of Aachen Cathedral.

His cousin of the same name, Prelate August Peters (* 1936 in Kaldenkirchen) is also a priest, cathedral chapter in Aachen and has been a member of the board of the “Mission and Leprosy Aid Action” for the diocese of Aachen for more than 20 years.
