August Schauer (born January 17, 1872 in Pöllandl near Töplitz , Austria-Hungary ; † July 1, 1941 in Laibach , Province of Laibach ) was a priest and publicist . With other Gottscheer priests he stood in opposition to the resettlement of the German-speaking ethnic group of Gottscheers from Yugoslavia by the National Socialists .

Life

Schauer first attended the lower grammar school in Gottschee and then the upper grammar school in Rudolfswerth , where he obtained the university entrance qualification. He then studied theology in Laibach and was ordained a priest on July 22nd, 1897.

Schauer held his first mass in Pöllandl on August 8th, 1897. From 1898 he was chaplain in Nesseltal and was then transferred to Altlag in 1899 . In 1901 Schauer became pastor in Unterwarmberg and returned to Nesseltal in 1906. Here he was pastor for over 30 years. In 1930 he was appointed to the clergy .

Schauer was the publisher of the Gottscheer calendar from 1925 to 1941 , which he had taken over from his predecessors Wilhelm Tschinkel (1921–1923) and Robert Braune (1924). In addition to ecclesiastical topics, the history of the Gottscheers was dealt with here and texts in the local dialect, Gottscheeric , were also published. In August 1930, Schauer was one of the organizers of the 600th anniversary of the settlement of the Gottschee and gave a long speech on this occasion.

After the Balkan campaign in April 1941, the Gottschee was occupied by the Italian army and became part of the Italian province of Ljubljana . The National Socialists relocated the Gottscheers from their homeland to Lower Styria , which was occupied by the Wehrmacht. The Diocesan Bishop of Ljubljana released the priests from the oath of loyalty. However, together with other Gottscheer clergymen ( Josef Eppich , Ferdinand Erker, Josef Erker, Josef Gliebe , Josef Kraker , Josef Kreiner and Alois Perz), Schauer took a public position against the planned resettlement. Shortly afterwards, Schauer fell seriously ill. He died on July 1, 1941 in the Leonium Hospital (Leonišče) in Ljubljana and was buried in his birthplace in Pöllandl.

His fellow priest Josef Eppich wrote an obituary for him, which appeared on July 3, 1941 in the "Gottscheer Zeitung". Among other things, it says here: Our last thing, whatever may come, we will not allow ourselves to be taken away: our fatherly faith, our homeland and our mother tongue. He championed these words in the calendar of 1925 until his death, and it pained him deeply to observe that lately our people have been lacking in understanding here and there.
