August Schröder (archivist)

August Schröder (born May 8, 1908 in Hollenstede (now the city of Fürstenau ), † June 19, 1993 in Münster ) was the state archivist and holder of the Federal Cross of Merit.

Vocational training

After attending the humanistic grammar school in Meppen , he studied theology and Romance philology (Latin, French) at the University of Innsbruck , at the Sorbonne in Paris and at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster.

Commitment to research and archives

From 1938 to 1977 he held positions as managing director, as well as the editing of the contributions for Westphalian family research , he was also chairman of the Westphalian society for genealogy and family research.

From 1946 to 1975 he was archivist at the archives advice center (today LWL archives office for Westphalia ) in Münster. He campaigned intensively for the rescue of the Rheine City Archives, which flooded in 1946 . Numerous aristocratic archives benefited from his work.

From 1976 he was a corresponding member of the Historical Commission for Westphalia .
