Cercideae is a tribe from the legume family (Fabaceae or Leguminosae). The up to 300 species occur pantropically.
description
They are evergreen or deciduous shrubs , trees and lianas . There may be tendrils. They are characterized by their leaf blade shape within the family. The alternate and spiral or two-line arranged leaves are not pinnate. As the leaves grow, the longitudinal growth along the midrib stops relatively early, while it continues at the edge of the leaf blade. This results in front-edged to two-column leaves. The stomata are mostly paracytic.
The hermaphroditic flowers are more or less strongly zygomorphic and five-fold with mostly double, only in Brenierea (which has no petals) single flower envelope . A flower cup (hypanthium) may be present. The five sepals are fused are open or closed at the top in front of the anthesis and form a whole-margined, toothed or two- to five-lobed calyx. There are usually ten, rarely fewer, mostly unequal stamens. Either all of the stamens are fertile or some of them have been converted to staminodes . The stamens can be partially grown together. There is only one carpel . The seeds mostly contain endosperm , no starch and often have an aril .
Systematics
The tribe Cercideae is the basal group in the family tree of the Fabaceae. Formerly incorporated into the subfamily of the Caesalpinioideae, it is not assigned to any of the three subfamilies today. A synonym for Cercideae Bronn is Bauhiniaceae Martynov .
The tribe Cercideae is divided into two sub-tribes. Depending on the author, these include about five or up to twelve genera and about 265 to 300 species:
- Subtribus Cercidinae with the three genera:
- Adenolobus (Harv. Ex Benth. & Hook. F.) Torre & Hillc. : The approximately three species are native to southwest Africa.
- Judas trees ( Cercis L. ): With ten kinds. There are shrubs and small trees. Their areas are in the Mediterranean climatic zones of the northern hemisphere .
- Griffonia Baill. : The four or so species are native to western Africa. They are shrubs or lianas
- Subtribus Bauhiniinae with two genera (with a broad understanding of the genus Bauhinia ):
- Bauhinien ( Bauhinia L .; see lat. About 250 to 300 species): Including Barklya F.Muell. , Cardenasia Rusby , Caspareopsis Britton & Rose , Casparia Kunth , Gigasiphon Drake , Lysiphyllum (Benth.) De Wit , Pauletia Cav. , Phanera Lour. , Piliostigma Hochst. , Schnella Raddi , Tylosema (Schweinf.) Torre & Hillc. Bauhinia s. st. is a pantropical genus with 150 to 160 species, there are trees and bushes. The other genera, if taken narrowly, contain lianas.
-
Brenierea Humbert : It is a monotypical genus with the only species:
- Brenierea insignis Humbert : This tree or shrub grows at altitudes between 0 and 500 meters in subarid locations in Madagascar .
