Life

In 1798, the pastor's son Unzer bought the Hartung bookstore from a bankruptcy estate . He ran it together with his business partner Johann Philipp Göbbels for 10 years and then continued it alone. In 1832 he handed the company over to his son Johann Otto Unzer and his son-in-law Heinrich Eduard Gräfe . The name Gräfe und Unzer results from this connection . The most prominent authors of the publishing house were the philosophers Immanuel Kant , Johann Gottlieb Fichte , Johann Friedrich Herbart and Karl Rosenkranz . Despite strong competition, Gräfe und Unzer remained the leading bookstore in the city and province. After the failure of his competitor Johann Jacob Kanter as a printer, publisher and assortment provider, he achieved a position similar to that of a monopoly. From 1774 to 1797 he published 283 books, almost twelve a year.

“The friendly, fat, little Unzer never took anything unsettling to camp or moved. He concentrated on academic textbooks and East Prussian native literature. "
