Johann August Carl Baron von der Howen (born July 31, 1803 in Würzau, Kurland; † March 22, 1868 in Meran ) was a Kurland state official.

Life

August von der Howen studied law at the Georg-August University of Göttingen and the University of Leipzig . He became a member of Curonia Goettingensis VII. After completing his studies, he was an assessor at the Doblen District Court in Mitau from 1826 to 1829 and at the Supreme Court in Goldingen from 1829 to 1835 . He then held the post of captain in Bauske until 1842 and head captain in Mitau until 1848, where he became the youngest 2nd councilor in 1848 and the youngest 1st councilor in 1851. From 1856 to 1859 he was land marshal . In 1859 he was made Oberburggraf, in 1860 Chancellor, in 1861 Landhofmeister and in the same year President of the Courland High Court, which he presided over until his death. In addition, he was President of the Courland Consistory from 1857 and President of the Provincial Justice Commission in Dorpat from 1864 to 1866.
