Auguste Fauchard

Auguste Fauchard (born March 5, 1881 in Laval ; † September 26, 1957 there ) was a French organist , composer , priest , educator and knight of the Legion of Honor .

Live and act

Auguste Fauchard received piano, organ and harmony lessons and at the age of 11 accompanied the services of the seminary on the organ. He studied theology and was ordained a priest in 1903. He then studied composition and organ in Paris with Louis Vierne and attended the lectures of Alexandre Guilmant's organ class at the Paris Conservatory . Until 1925 he worked as vicar and organist in Notre-Dame de Mayenne (with a brief interruption during the First World War, where he did a service in nursing). To complete his studies, he completed courses at the Schola Cantorum Paris from 1925 to 1927 with Vincent d'Indy and André Marchal .

He was awarded first prize in the organ improvisation competition and certificates in composition. Then he returned to Laval and was appointed organist of the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity ( Cathédrale de la Sainte-Trinité de Laval ) and music director for sacred music of the diocese . In addition to his musical activities, he was secretary of the diocese. In 1929 he was made an Honorary Canon ( Chanoine ) and on June 5, 1953, a Knight of the Legion of Honor. He gave over 200 concerts, inaugurated new organs and worked as a teacher. His compositional style was stylistically based on that of his teacher Louis Vierne. A year before his death, he wrote his memoir . A street name was named after him in Laval: Rue Auguste Fauchard .
