Augustin Dumay (born January 17, 1949 in Paris ) is a French violinist and conductor .

Life

Augustin Dumay was born into a family of musicians and received violin lessons from his father from the age of five. From the age of 10 he was able to attend the Paris Conservatory . After receiving the gold medal, he took private lessons for five years, among others with Arthur Grumiaux in Brussels.

At the age of 14 he gave a concert at a festival in Montreux , where he attracted the attention of the violinists Henryk Szeryng and Joseph Szigeti , who passed him on. His international career began in 1979 after a concert conducted by Herbert von Karajan in Paris. After that he made a brilliant solo career, which allowed him to perform with the best orchestras and the most famous conductors. He has received countless record awards and has taken part in numerous festivals, for example in Montreux, Bath, Berlin, Lucerne, Aix-en-Provence, Leipzig and in Lincoln Center New York.

From September 2003 to January 2014 Dumay directed the “Royal Chamber Orchestra of Wallonia” (Belgium), which was founded in 1958 by the Romanian violinist Lola Bobesco (1921–2003).

He is also one of the supervisor lecturers at the “Chapelle Musicale Reine Elisabeth” in Brussels. There, young professional musicians are intensively prepared for their careers. The finalists of the Queen Elisabeth Competition ( Concours Musical Reine Elisabeth ) are supervised and prepared here every year . From 2002 to 2005 Dumay was artistic director of the music festival in Menton in the south of France . In 2008 he was officially appointed first guest conductor of the "Kansai Philharmonic Orchestra" in Osaka . Until 2012 he was musical director of the “Lisbon Metropolitan Orchestra”.

The film director Gérard Corbiau created a film biography about the violinist in 2008 ; " Augustin Dumay, Laisser une trace dans le cœur ".

Augustin Dumay was married to the pianist Maria João Pires , with whom he a. a. has recorded all of Ludwig van Beethoven's violin sonatas . Dumay is currently married to the cellist and music manager Anne Hermant.
