Mar Augustine Kandathil ( Malayalam മാർ അഗസ്റ്റിൻ കണ്ടത്തിൽ Mār Agasṟṟin Kaṇṭattil ; born August 25, 1874 in Chempu , Kerala ; † January 10, 1956 in Ernakulam , Kerala) was Archbishop of the Syro-Malabar Archdiocese of Ernakulam .

Life

Mar Augustine Kandathil was ordained a priest on December 21, 1901. On August 29, 1911, he was appointed coadjutor of the Apostolic Vicariate Ernakulam and titular bishop of Arad . The episcopal ordination donated him on December 3, 1911, the later titular Latin Patriarch of Antioch , Ladislaus Zaleski .

After the death of the Apostolic Vicar of Ernakulam, Aloysius Pazheparambil , Mar Augustine Kandathil succeeded him as Apostolic Vicar . With the elevation of Ernakulam to archbishopric on St. Thomas' Day (December 21st) 1923, he became the first archbishop of Ernakulam and the first Indian Catholic archbishop of modern times.
