The Augustinian monastery in Speyer was a begging monastery founded in the 13th century .

history

After it was founded in the middle of the 13th century, the monastery burned down in 1334 and was largely destroyed in the process. Shortly after the fire, it was rebuilt and rebuilt in the 15th century. In 1430, the priors , guardians and brothers of four monasteries, including the Augustinian monastery, were accepted into the citizenship of the city of Speyer at their request . Over the years, formerly poor orders came to prosper through trade and legacies . In 1488, the city council of Speyer asked these monasteries, including the Augustinian monastery, to pay taxes for the maintenance of the mercenary army according to the protection treaty of 1430. At the beginning of the 16th century, Protestant masses were held in the quarters of the Augustinian monastery and in 1526 a. a. the Augustinian prior Michael Diller on Luther's ideas. After the prior was called to be evangelical preacher in the city, some monks left the monastery. In 1570 some monks returned after an agreement with the city.

When the Speyer town fire in 1689, the monastery was destroyed except for the choir of the 13th century Gothic church. From 1697 to 1714 the convent was rebuilt on the medieval foundation walls, and from 1733 to 1737 it was expanded into a regular four-wing complex. After the conquest of Speyer by French troops, the convent was secularized in 1793 and the buildings leased. In 1804 the building was auctioned to private individuals who used them as poor houses. In 1855 the city bought the buildings while retaining the poor houses. In 1866 all the convent buildings, with the exception of the cloister, were demolished. The Gothic choir also fell victim to the pickaxe. A school building was built on the area created in this way in 1866/67 according to plans by Max von Siebert, and the cloister was integrated into the south wing. In 1869, the Palatinate History Museum was founded on the third floor of the building . This collection moved to the building on Domplatz planned by Gabriel von Seidel in 1910. In 1982 the school building was demolished. The main office of the former Kreis- und Stadtsparkasse Speyer (now Sparkasse Vorderpfalz ) was built in its place in 1985 . In addition to the Augustinergasse nearby, which is reminiscent of the monastery, the 15th century cloister of the former church with the late Gothic, pointed arched tracery arcades is still preserved in Wormser Straße 39. It was dismantled in 1982 and four years later it was relocated and rebuilt in a different configuration. In memory of the monastery, an event hall at the Sparkasse headquarters was named Augustinersaal.
