Augustine Sartorius

Augustin Sartorius (* 1663 in Hrob ; † November 1, 1723 in Mariánské Radčice ) was a Czech-Austrian Cistercian and church historian .

life and work

Born in Klostergrab (today: Hrob, north of Osek ), Sartorius entered the Ossegg Monastery and made his solemn profession in 1687. He worked in his monastery as an administrator and notary. He died as pastor of Maria Ratschitz (today: Mariánské Radčice, south of Osek). In addition, he is only known for his works.

Sartorius published

  • a Cistercian order history up to 1698 (Latin and German edition),
  • an annotated collection of documents on the history of the Salem Imperial Abbey
  • an encyclopedia of important figures in Christianity,
  • a short version of the annals of Cesare Baronio , which was continued by his Ossegger confrere Eustachius Janka (1693–1742),
  • an abridged reprint (of the long German version of 1673) of the Marian Atlas by the Jesuit Wilhelm Gumppenberg .

Sartorius' research achievement was recognized by Leopold Janauschek . Eugène Manning calls Sartorius one of the most important authors for the history of the Cistercian order.
