Augusto Heleno Ribeiro Pereira (born October 29, 1947 in Curitiba ) is a Brazilian politician and former general . Since January 1, 2019, he has been Head of the Cabinet for Institutional Security under President Jair Bolsonaro .

Career

In 1969 he graduated from the Academia Militar das Agulhas Negras and was a member of the Brazilian army until 2011, where he was, among other things, military commander for the Amazon. Between August 2004 and August 2005, Heleno was the commander of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti .

It has been speculated that Heleno might run as Bolsonaro's vice-presidential candidate. Shortly after Bolsonaro's election as president, Heleno was again the subject of speculation that he might become the new defense minister. This office ultimately went to Fernando Azevedo e Silva , while Heleno was appointed head of the Cabinet for Institutional Security, officially Gabinete de Segurança Institucional da Presidência da República (GSI), to which the secret services such as the Agência Brasileira de Inteligência (Abin) also report.

Controversy

Heleno said after 45 years of military service positively about the coup d'etat of the military , the 1964 president in João Goulart brought to case. According to him, the Brazilian military dictatorship prevented the country from becoming a “great Cuba” and the amnesty from “leading a terrorist to the presidency of the republic”.

While he was in Haiti under his command, the incident in the Cité Soleil slum in Port-au-Prince , which human rights groups described as a massacre, resulted in 22,000 rounds of ammunition being fired within the civilian population.

In 2013 he was fined R $ 4000, around 1000 euros, for corruption . He had awarded contracts valued at R $ 22 million to two military-related institutions and friends of the family without the public tender provided for them.

He was a member of the Partido Republicano Progressista (PRP) party, which disbanded and joined the right-wing and Christian fundamentalist Patriota party.

Augusto Heleno had tested positive for COVID-19 on March 18, 2020 but was able to return after seven days of domestic isolation.
