The Aula Magna is the largest lecture hall at Stockholm University in Sweden . The building was designed by the British-Swedish architect Ralph Erskine (1914-2005) together with Lars Wilson and inaugurated in 1997.

history

Stockholm State University emerged from the Stockholm University in 1960. Since then, new buildings have been built for the Frescati Campus in the Norra Djurgården district . Erskine has received orders for individual buildings since 1974, including the Allhuset (1981), the university library ( 1979–1983), the Frescatihallen sports hall (1983) and the Juristernas hus (1991). The Aula Magna , which was completed in 1997, was Erskine's last commission for the Frescati Campus.

architecture

The Aula Magna is seven stories high, three of which are built into the rock. The main entrance in the northeast appears low. The facade is made of glass, wood and steel and leads into the spacious foyer . In contrast, the south-west facade extends over seven floors. This part of the building is loosened up by staggered volumes of different sizes and heights. Building material is patterned brick with different textures and different shades of red, yellow and brown. The sun reflectors on the roof, which guide daylight into the auditorium via light shafts, are typical of Erskine.

The Aula Magna has a gross area of 7860 m². The large hall with 1194 seats can be divided into two rooms with 557 and 637 seats respectively. There are also a number of conference and seminar rooms with 18 to 50 seats, the gallery and foyer can each hold 500 people.

The sculptors Liss Eriksson (1919–2000) and Kirsten Ortwed (* 1948) were responsible for the artistic design .

Every year in December, the Nobel Laureate Lectures take place here, organized by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences . It is also used for doctorates, conferences and symposia or, for example, for general meetings of Swedish public companies. In August 2019, the Aula Magna was the venue for the 15th Wikimania of the Wikimedia Foundation (WMF).
