Aurélien Barrau (born May 19, 1973 in Neuilly-sur-Seine ) is a French astrophysicist .

Scientific career

Barrau studied physics at the University of Joseph Fourier and the ENSPG-INPG in Grenoble and graduated in 1995 with the grade "very good" as the best of the year. From 1995 to 1998 Barrau did his doctorate at the University of Joseph Fourier with Monique Rivoal (collaboration with the Laboratoire de Physique Nucléaire et de Hautes Energies (LPNHE) in Paris) on gamma high-energy astrophysics and active galaxy nuclei , receiving the grade très honorable avec les félicitations du jury . Barrau has been working at the Laboratoire de Physique Subatomique et de Cosmologie (LPSC) in Grenoble since 1998 and is Maître de conférences at the University of Joseph Fourier. In 2004 he completed his habilitation on black holes in the early stages of the universe. For his work in the field of high-energy astrophysics and cosmology , he was awarded the Bogolyubov Prize in December 2006 , an award for young scientists in the field of theoretical physics . Barrau has been an adjunct professor at Joseph Fourier University since 2008 . In 2009 Aurélien Barrau was visiting professor at the renowned Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques (IHES) and was appointed to the Institut universitaire de France .

In his theoretical work, Aurélien Barrau deals primarily with cosmology , black holes and loop quantum gravity . He is also involved in some experimental projects to study cosmic rays , such as B. the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS).

Others

Aurélien Barrau is a regular guest on popular science radio shows and several times a year gives lectures on astrophysical topics intended for a wider audience. As a teacher, Barrau attaches great importance to arousing the curiosity of his students for elementary questions and bringing them into contact with current research at an early stage.

In 2018, Barrau was one of the 200 signatories of an appeal in the newspaper Le Monde , in which it was warned of drastic consequences such as the extinction of human species, unless a quick rethinking of problem areas such as climate change and the extinction of species and wider planetary limits occurs.

Aurélien Barrau is married and has two children. His pastimes include poetry , music, and philosophy (Barrau also holds a degree in philosophy).
