The Austerlitz format or North Trilateral or Slavkov trilateral is a loose cooperation between the Central European countries of the Czech Republic , Slovakia and Austria .

Surname

The name is derived from the South Moravian town of Austerlitz . This is particularly known because of the Battle of Austerlitz of 1805, which is also known as the Battle of the Three Emperors .

background

In the form of the Visegrád Group , an agreement on cooperation between the Central European countries of Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary had existed since February 15, 1991. It was particularly important for the Czech Republic to expand this group to include Slovenia and Austria. For this reason, the Czech President Miloš Zeman announced at a press conference in Ljubljana, Slovenia on April 3, 2014 that Slovenia and Austria would also take part in the meetings of an expanded Visegrád group in the future. Immediately on April 4, 2014, however, the Hungarian Foreign Ministry announced through its spokesman Gábor Kaleta that an expansion of the Visegrád Group was not planned and thus rejected Zeman's offer to Slovenia and Austria.

Apart from Hungary's unwillingness to include Slovenia and Austria in the Visegrád Group, the different points of view regarding the sanctions against Russia in the wake of the Ukraine conflict by Poland on the one hand and the three states of the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Austria on the other proved to be an obstacle on the way to an extension of the Visegrád group.

Another framework had to be found for the extended collaboration. On January 29, 2015, the Prime Ministers of the Czech Republic Bohuslav Sobotka and Slovakia Robert Fico and the Austrian Chancellor Werner Faymann met in Slavkov u Brna , i.e. Austerlitz near Brno. The Austerlitz Declaration was signed and the Austerlitz format was launched.

Petr Drulák, the Czech Deputy Foreign Minister, emphasized, however, that the Austerlitz format does not see itself as competition, but rather as a complement to the Visegrád group.
