history
At the beginning there was only one game league. The league was founded in 1999 by the then only Australian football clubs in Germany - the Frankfurt Redbacks and Munich Kangaroos ; The German Australian Rules Football Association (GARFA), founded in 1995, was incorporated into it. In the following years other teams were added: 2001 the Berlin Crocodiles , 2003 the Hamburg Dockers , 2004 the Rheinland Lions , 2012 the Dresden Wolves and 2017 the Zuffenhausen Giants (emerged from the Stuttgart Emus founded in 2009 and the Freiberg Taipans founded in 2011 ).
Over the years, the structure of the league has been adapted to the level of performance of the various teams. In 2009, with the addition of Stuttgart Emus, a second division was introduced for one season . From 2015 to 2016 there were two divisions : on the one hand a 16's league, which continued the previous AFLG operations and consisted of only three clubs, and on the other hand a 9's expansion league for teams in the development and consolidation stage.
16's league
The season includes the calendar year. The participants complete 10 game rounds, followed by the two semi-finals of the four best teams and the Grand Final.
From the first season in 2003 to 2019, a total of 17 championship titles were awarded. Five clubs managed to win the championship: the Munich Kangaroos, the Rheinland Lions, the Frankfurt Redbacks, the Hamburg Dockers and the Berlin Crocodiles. The record champions are the Munich Kangaroos with six titles.

Regional leagues
In 2010, the Bayern League established another, more regionally focused form of Australian football competition in Germany. As a rule, two to four game teams were formed with players from the cadres of the already existing AFLG clubs. However, some of these game teams were also organized as independent clubs (Ludwigsburg Taipans). The participating teams played, as in the AFLG, a return series with a final game. Mostly the modified 9-a-side rules were used.
