The Munich Kangaroos Football Club eV (MFC), short Munich Kangaroos or just Munich Roos ( German : Munich Kangaroos ), is an Australian Rules Football Club from Munich .

history

The founding idea arose back in 1993 at one of the monthly meetings of the Munich Australian-New Zealand Stammtisch, at which the closing party of the Australian Football League was celebrated. As a result, rules were worked out and at the 10th anniversary of the German-Australian Stammtisch in May 1995 in the Löwenbräukeller , the topic was concretized. First two teams were formed, the "Munich Whites" and the "Bayern Blues" (also called the "Presidents") and the first two regular games could be held until September 1995. The colors white and blue were chosen not only because of the Bavarian national colors , but also based on the blue and white striped jerseys of the North Melbourne Kangaroos .

In December 1995 the German Australian Rules Football Association (GARFA) was founded in Munich in the legal form of a registered club . At the same time, the Frankfurt Redbacks emerged in Frankfurt am Main and entered the club register as Frankfurt Football Club as early as November 1995 . The first Australian football games could also be played between the Munich and Frankfurt clubs.

In 1999, GARFA joined the jointly founded Australian Football League Germany (AFLG), which other clubs gradually joined. There have been championships in the league since 2003. The Munich Kangaroos won the championship title in 2003, 2005, 2006, 2010 and 2012, took second place six times and first place once in the 16's league (as of 2015). In 2015 the club competed in the AFLG 16's league as well as in the 9's league and won the title with 491.9 points. After a title tie with the Rheinland Lions in the 2015 season (both 5 championship titles each in the 16's league), the Kangaroos were able to win the championship title again in 2016.

Head coach and co-founder Julien Kann, son of Hawthorn Hawks player Brian Kann (* 1933), was not only the initiator of the Munich club and its long-standing president, but also one of the initiators behind the founding of the AFLG. Greg Langley, incumbent president and former head coach, is currently also the manager of the ALFG-Bundesliga.

More teams

There are now other Australian football teams in Munich that play in the so-called Bayern League , which was launched in 2010 by the '' Pasing Hawks '', the Schwabing Saints and the Sendling Blues , but which are actually made up of so-called second teams the kangaroos were formed.

On the occasion of its 20th anniversary, the Munich Kangaroos organized the first Munich “OzFest”, a German-Australian “ Down Underopen-air festival at the Munich cattle market in August 2015 , which was supported by the Munich Cultural Department and other sponsors . There, among other things, the Thunderbirds performed , which became known through the television series Irgendwie und Sowieso , in which Bruno Jonas played the bandleader as the postman named "Tango", and who were closely associated with some musicians of the Spider Murphy Gang , as well as the band The Karl Marx Brothers by the painter and musician Timothy James Webb .

Due to its success, the "OzFest" was held again from August 5th to 7th, 2016.

Club song

We are the Kangaroos,
We are the Munich Kangaroos,
We're the team who party hard then play,
Whether we're at home or playing away.

We're the true professionals,
No one can match us,
Or even catch us,
So prepare yourself for playing,
Against the Munich Kangaroos!
