Josef Schmid (born September 27, 1969 in Munich ) is a German business lawyer and politician ( CSU ). From May 21, 2014 to November 4, 2018, he was second mayor of the state capital of Munich and also headed the Department for Labor and Economics . He has been a member of the Bavarian State Parliament since November 5, 2018 .

education and profession

Schmid was born in 1969 as the son of a master butcher in Allach and graduated from high school in 1989 at the Ignaz-Taschner-Gymnasium in Dachau . Before that he was the student representative at the Louise-Schroeder-Gymnasium in Untermenzing. He did his military service with the Pioneer Battalion 210 in the Munich radio barracks .

Schmid studied from 1990 to 1995 at the University of Passau first Business Administration and from 1993 to 2000 law in Passau and at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich . The business graduate has been a lawyer since his second state examination and was a partner in a national, medium-sized law firm until 2014.

Political party

Schmid's political career began in 1981 when he joined the Schüler Union . In 1986 membership in the Junge Union followed . In 1987 he joined the CSU and since 2004 he has been a member of the SME Union and chairman of the CSU district association Munich-West. In 2011 he was elected deputy district chairman of the Munich CSU. He was co-opted into the CSU party executive committee in 2007 and 2011 .

Public offices

After the local elections in spring 2002, Schmid was elected to the Munich City Council, where he was chairman of the CSU parliamentary group from 2007 to 2014. He was also a member of the Education and Sports Committee and the Urban Planning and Building Regulations Committee. In the election on March 2, 2008, he ran as the top candidate, but he was defeated by the incumbent Christian Ude . In the 2014 local elections , he ran again as the top candidate of his party for the post of Lord Mayor, for which his party nominated him in the spring of 2011. In the runoff election he was defeated by 43.3 to 56.7% against the SPD candidate Dieter Reiter . After the SPD and CSU had formed a coalition in the Munich city council, Schmid was elected second mayor and economic advisor. Responsibility for the Oktoberfest is also associated with the speaker .

Since 2008 he has been a member of the German Association of Cities and Deputy Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the municipal housing association GEWOFAG . Since 2014 he has been chairman of the supervisory board of the Munich industrial courtyards and the Munich Technology Center (MTZ).

Schmid won the direct mandate in the state election in Bavaria in 2018 in the Munich-Pasing district . He then resigned from the office of 2nd Mayor of the City of Munich, but remains as a city councilor in local politics. Schmid is currently a member of the Committee on Constitution, Law, Parliamentary Issues and Integration in the Bavarian State Parliament.

Private

Schmid is a Catholic and has been married to Natalie Schmid since 2003, with whom he has two children. In his private life he played the organ and drums, the latter as part of a band, which had earned him additional income at dance events at a young age. He was also involved in the handball club TSV Allach 09 as a circle runner and in the local rifle club.
