The local elections in Munich in 2008 took place on March 2nd, 2008 , as in all of Bavaria . In Munich , the district committees were also elected in addition to the mayor and city council .

voter turnout

The turnout for 989,782 voters was 47.6 percent (2002: 50.9 percent). Even with the postal voting participation fell from 23.5 percent (2002) to 22.1 percent (2008). The number of people entitled to vote had risen by around 84,000 since 2002. This was due to a strong influx during this period, the introduction of the second home tax (which prompted many to register a first residence ) and the easier naturalization for foreigners.

Constituencies

Before the local elections , the electoral districts were reallocated . A total of 14 additional polling stations were set up, but seven polling stations were also saved. This increased the number of voting districts in the 2008 local elections from 656 to 663.

In Munich the title of the incumbent mayor is Lord Mayor . The second and third mayors are elected directly from the ranks of the city council by this body. Christian Ude was re-elected for the third time in the first ballot with an absolute majority. Deputy Mayor was Christine Strobl (SPD), the third mayor was Hep Monatzeder (The Greens).

City council election

Even though Munich, with over 1.3 million inhabitants, is the largest city with a local government in Germany (Berlin and Hamburg are federal states with the corresponding institutions), the city councils are voluntary. The professional city councilors (referred to as speakers in Munich as heads of the respective departments ) are directly elected by the city council for 6 years. You are a member of the city council and have the right to speak but not to vote. Due to resignations and retirements, the speakers' elections take place on different dates, regardless of the local elections.

District committee election

In Bavaria, district committees must be formed in cities with more than one million inhabitants (Art. 60, Paragraph 2, Clause 3 of the Municipal Code). These have the task of supporting and enforcing district-related issues of the citizens. One also speaks of a "district parliament". According to the municipal code for the Free State of Bavaria (Art. 60, Paragraph 3, Clause 2), the election took place at the same time as the city council members for the election period of the city council.
