Autel de la Patrie in Thionville

The Monument Autel de la Patrie (German Altar des Vaterlandes ) in Thionville , a town in the French Moselle department in the Lorraine region , is one of the few revolutionary monuments that have been preserved in France, including the best preserved. It has stood on Place Claude Arnoult since 1948 and has been protected as a cultural monument ( Monument historique ) since 1989 .

history

Around 36,000 monuments of this type were erected in France during the French Revolution . The legislative decree of June 26th, 1792 prescribed its establishment. After the decision of the town council of Thionville on July 14, 1796, Mathias Robert was commissioned to build the monument to replace one made of wood.

The monument has the shape of an obelisk with a stone sphere at the end and an inscription that commemorates the successful revolution. It was originally located on the Place de la Révolution , now known as the Place du Marché . Since it was erected and crossed in the Saint-François cemetery in 1810, it has been preserved for posterity. In all other places in France, the "Altars of the Fatherland" were destroyed in the post-revolutionary period.

1948 the monument was at a solemn ceremony by the French President Vincent Auriol , the awards of the Legion of Honor and the Croix de guerre added.
