history

During the Nazi era, all Düsseldorf Sinti families who had been forcibly evicted from their previous place of residence on the Heinefeld or from their apartments were housed in a forced camp on the Höherweg as a result of police persecution . The resettlement was under the slogan issued by Robert Ritter of "immediate police surveillance". In the camp, a sadistic supervisor including a sheepdog was able to let off steam unhindered with the people. Most of the residents were then killed in concentration camps. After 1945 the Höherweg camp housed a few returned survivors of the human extermination. Through the activities of the artist Otto Pankok , both periods are well documented in pictures and photos, these documents have been preserved.

As part of industrial closures and restructuring of the neighboring Stadtwerke Düsseldorf, the area moved into the urban planning focus. In the past, various car dealers, workshops and scrapyards had settled in the district. When Gottfried Schultz GmbH & Co.KG was looking for an expansion option for its Düsseldorf branch, the idea for the automobile mile arose.

Urban planning concept

Central pedestrian promenade

The central axis of the automobile mile is a green and traffic-calmed pedestrian promenade running from west to east, along which the various car brands can present themselves. Further pedestrianized paths branch off from this axis. The workshops, warehouses and disposal areas are arranged inside the building as far as possible so that there are shop windows on up to four sides of the building. A ring road leads around this central and traffic-calmed area. In the southern area there are service providers, the registration office, restaurants and the central parking garage. Luminous, green pylons with the trademark “AM” are intended to facilitate orientation and are also the leitmotif of the automobile mile. In order to achieve a certain degree of uniformity and architectural quality on the one hand, but also to meet the presentation needs of the various car brands on the other hand, a design statute was issued.

architecture

The architectural concept was developed by the Essen architects Koschany + Zimmer Architekten KZA . Landscape architects was the Duisburg office Plan B alternatives .
