Vehicle of the auto.Bus - Seestadt

The autonomous bus in the Vienna urban development area Seestadt Aspern is a test operation for autonomous driving .

vehicle

The vehicles produced by the French company Navya each have ten seats and one space for prams. They are approved for testing at a speed of 20 km / h. They do not need a new infrastructure. They are guided by GPS , laser scanning and odometry . If a vehicle deviates noticeably from the programmed route, an emergency brake is triggered. The same applies if it is moving towards an obstacle. This is determined with sensors that secure the vehicle in all directions. If a vehicle is stopped automatically, it can be controlled manually by the so-called "operator".

business

Wiener Linien has been testing a driverless bus under the auto.Bus - Seestadt brand in Seestadt Aspern since June 6, 2019. This is done in cooperation with the Austrian Institute of Technology , Siemens , TÜV Austria , the Board of Trustees for Traffic Safety and the vehicle manufacturer.

The test route leads from the Seestadt underground station via the “Seeseiten”, “Susanne-Schmida-Gasse”, “Schenk-Danzinger-Gasse” and “Maria-Tusch-Straße” stops to the “FeelGood” apartments. There is no regular timetable , but the website of the public transport company shows where the next bus is on the two-kilometer route. The ride does not cost anything during the trial operation.

For safety reasons, a driver accompanies the test run and can intervene manually and control the vehicle if necessary.

Planning

After the test operation in the Danube city , the bus is to run in regular service in the city center .

accident

On July 18, 2019, a pedestrian ran sideways against the bus and suffered slight abrasions. According to witnesses, she had headphones on and her eyes on her phone. Wiener Linien then interrupted the test operation until the incident was resolved and passed the recorded data on to the manufacturer. According to Wiener Linien, the analysis showed that the bus reacted completely correctly, so there was no need for technical readjustments. They resumed operations on July 23, 2019.
