The Avaiki Cave is a cave in the west of the Pacific island of Niue . It is located near the villages of Makefu and Tuapa , 6 km north of the capital Alofi .
The grotto is characterized by water in various shades of azure and is used for tourism. After descending through a 200 m long gorge, you reach a karst cave connected to the sea with a large water basin in front of it. This basin was previously reserved for the King of Niue. Today, except on Sundays and during the spawning season of the kaloama fish, you can swim in the pool.
Nearby is the Palaha Cave. There are more stalagmites and stalactites here compared to Avaiki Cave .
The name of the cave is derived from the mythical island of Avaiki (Hawaiki) , where the Polynesian peoples see their origin. The first people are said to have reached the island at the grotto.
