Alofi is the capital of the Pacific state Niue . Alofi has (as of 2017) 597 inhabitants. The place consists of the two administrative units ( Villages ) Alofi North (170 inhabitants) and Alofi South, where the government buildings are (427 inhabitants).

Alofi is located on the west coast of Niue in the center of Alofi Bay . Before Alofi is the only gap in the coral reef that surrounds the entire island. Boats pass through this gap in a fairway marked by two leading lights . There is no walled harbor there.

The Hanan International Airport in Alofi is the international airport of Niue.

Cyclone in 2004

On January 6, 2004, cyclone Heta swept over the island and destroyed numerous Alofi buildings, including the hospital, the Niue Hotel, the museum and cultural center, the courthouse and shops for divers. Hundreds of residents were left homeless. A 24-year-old nurse died trying to protect her two-year-old child.

The rebuilding program for the island was set to run for five years. The estimated costs amounted to 23 million US dollars . It was hoped for help from New Zealand and Australia and the European Union. The Niue government decided that the destroyed shops in Alofi, the hospital and the Niue Hotel should be built on a higher plateau near Fonuakula.
