Avatele is one of the fourteen villages on the Pacific island of Niue . The island has been linked to New Zealand by an association agreement since 1974 . At the 2017 census, Avatele had 143 inhabitants. As Avatele has one of the few beaches on the island, it is a popular destination for tourists.
history
On June 20, 1774, James Cook tried to go ashore in Avatele Bay. But this third attempt to set foot on the island also failed because the islanders were hostile. Then Cook named the island "Savage Island" (Island of the Wild). No other foreign ship landed on Niue in the next half century.
In 1846, Samoa missionaries from the London Missionary Society began to Christianize the island . A Christian church was consecrated in Avatele in 1854.
In Avatele - as in many other regions of Polynesia - there is a memorial that commemorates the fallen soldiers in the First and Second World Wars .
