Hikutavake is one of the fourteen villages on the Pacific island of Niue . The island has been linked to New Zealand by an association agreement since 1974 . At the 2017 census, Hikutavake had 49 residents. This makes Hikutavake the third smallest village in Niues.

location

Hikutavake is located in the northwest of the island, in the former Motu tribal area and has a sea access in the north, where the Talava Arches can also be found. Hikutavake is bordered by Namukulu and Tuapa to the west and south-west, and Toi and Mutalau to the east and south-east .

history

In Hikutavake a monument that commemorates the men from Hikutavake which is in the First and Second World War fought for New Zealand.

Talava Arches

The Talava Cave or Talava Arches are the most famous sights of Hikutavake. It is a system of rock gates and caves on the northwest coast of Niue north of the village. The largest of the rock arches juts out into the sea.

Access is from the coastal road via a branch of the path leading to Matapa Chasm and leads through one of the caves.

The largest of the arches has a span of about 35 meters and a height of about 8 meters. The second arch has a span of about 14 meters and a height of about 10.5 meters. The third has a span of 15 meters and a height of 10.5 meters.
