The Avenger-class ships are minesweepers of the United States Navy . You have the task of clearing important sea connections from sea mines . For this purpose, they are equipped with various sensors and mine clearance devices. The fuselage is made of wood, which is covered with fiberglass-reinforced plastic to keep the magnetic signature as low as possible. The wood used is oak , Douglas fir and Nootka false cypress . Between 1987 and 1994, Marinette Marine Corporation of Marinette , Wisconsin and Peterson Ship Builders, also of Wisconsin, built fourteen units.
The USS Avenger (MCM-1) was the longest-serving ship in the coalition forces during the 2nd Gulf War 1990/91.
Since 2005 , the Avenger-class ships have been part of the Active Naval Reserve Force , Mine Countermeasures Squadron 2 , US Atlantic Fleet.
