Averill Abraham Liebow
Averill Abraham Liebow (born March 31, 1911 in Stryj , Galicia , † May 1978 in La Jolla , San Diego , California ) was an American pathologist .
He emigrated to the USA as a young boy. There he studied medicine at Yale University ( New Haven (Connecticut) ) and worked primarily in the field of pulmonary pathology. In 1944, in collaboration with the pathologist Charles B. Carrington , he published the first histological classification of idiopathic interstitial pneumonia . During World War II he was also a lieutenant in the United States Army and researched the effects of the atomic bomb in Hiroshima and Nagasaki .
