Data on the reservoir
Storage space 2.4 million m³

The Avis Dam is a dam in Namibia , on the eastern edge of the Windhoek district of Avis . The dam was completed in 1933. Its reservoir has a capacity of around 2.4 million , making the storage space one of the smallest reservoirs in Namibia.

The Avis Dam is fed by two rivers and drained by the Klein Windhoek Rivier . It is located in a popular local recreation area in the Erosberg Mountains . Originally, the dam was supposed to function as a sustainable drinking water reservoir for the city of Windhoek. Due to its small catchment area , the reservoir could not continuously meet these requirements, although it was unable to supply any water at all for many years due to the weather. Therefore, from 1958 onwards, the role of the municipal water reservoir was increasingly taken over by the newly constructed and larger Goreangab Dam , so that the Avis Dam is now valued primarily as a recreational area.

Current development

As part of the Windhoek River Walk Project, the City of Windhoek is planning a 20-kilometer hiking trail in the Klein Windhoek Rivier from Goreangab to the Avis Dam. This should include paved running and bike paths as well as other facilities. Expenditure of 150 million Namibian dollars is planned for this.
