The Avrupa Türk-İslam Birliği (ATIB - "Union of Turkish-Islamic Cultural Associations in Europe eV") is an umbrella organization of Turkish-Islamic cultural associations based in Cologne . The union emerged as a split from the right-wing extremist representation of the gray wolves abroad . According to its own statements, 123 clubs nationwide are affiliated with it.

history

The association was formed after a group of member associations of the Federation of Turkish-Democratic Idealist Associations in Germany (ADÜTDF) split off in October 1987. The split-off associations merged on May 21, 1988 in Koblenz to form the "Union of Turkish-Islamic Cultural Associations eV" ( Turk Islam Dernekleri Birligi - TIKDB) together. The spun off association has had its current name since 1993.

Self-image and goals

The association states that their purpose is the practice of Islamic religion and the promotion of international understanding. The aim is to maintain the cultural and religious identity and to protect the economic interests of the Turks who immigrated to Europe in the 1960s, as well as their internal and external articulation. The ATİB claims to be committed to tolerance and friendship and opposed to isolation and discrimination .

organization

The number of members is given as 11,500, according to an estimate by the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees it is 8-10,000. The ATİB is a founding member of the Central Council of Muslims in Germany (ZMD) and of the Council of Citizens of Turkish Origin in Germany (RTS). Some of the imams in the mosques operated by the ATİB are religious officials from the Turkish Institute for Religious Affairs , whose salaries are paid partly by the Turkish state and partly by the organization.

criticism

Since the ADÜTDF is the foreign organization of the gray wolves , ATİB is still associated with this term today. The association rejects these allegations and has distanced itself from the acts of violence committed by the gray wolves in Turkey and the Federal Republic of Germany in the 1970s. The State Office for the Protection of the Constitution of Hesse, on the other hand, attributes the ATİB in particular to the Turkish nationalism of the “gray wolves”, in whose associations the ideology of the “gray wolves” is cultivated and communicated.

The German-Turkish online magazine Kozmopolit doubts that ATİB promotes the integration of its members into German society and accuses the organization of the idea of a "nationalist - Islamist parallel society". Representatives of the Alevis and Armenians also criticize, similar to the Millî Görüş and DİTİB associations, ATİB's “lack of distance to extremist associations”.
