Axel Dittmann

Axel Dittmann (born March 23, 1966 in Bonn ) is a German diplomat who has been Brexit coordinator in the Federal Foreign Office since 2018 . From 2015 to 2018 he was ambassador to Belgrade .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1985, Dittmann began studying economics , which he completed in 1991. Since 1986 he has been a member of the Corps Saxo-Borussia Heidelberg .

career

In 1992 Dittmann began the preparatory service for the higher foreign service and after its graduation he worked at the Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York City between 1994 and 1995 . He then worked as a management consultant at McKinsey & Company in Berlin from 1996 to 1998 and returned to the Foreign Service in 1998, where he worked for a short time in the Political Department of the Foreign Office . He then worked between 1998 and 1999 in the branch office of the Embassy in Serbia in Pristina and from 1999 to 2000 as a member of the United Nations Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK).

Dittmann then acted as deputy head of division in the United Nations Department of the Federal Foreign Office between 2001 and 2001 and was then part of the negotiating team of the EU special envoy for Macedonia François Léotard for some time in 2001 . From 2001 to 2004 he was part of the negotiating team at the Foreign Office for the Treaty on a Constitution for Europe . Afterwards he was employed at the embassy in Washington between 2004 and 2006 , before he was a member of the negotiating team of the UN office of the Special Envoy for Kosovo UNOSEK (United Nations Office of the Special Envoy for Kosovo) in Vienna from 2006 to 2007 .

After his return to Germany, Dittmann was Deputy Head of Division in the European Department of the Foreign Office between 2007 and 2011 and then Head of Division for EU policy issues in the European Department of the Foreign Office from 2011 to 2015. In July 2015, Dittmann succeeded the retired Heinz Wilhelm as Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in Belgrade ( Serbia ). In the summer of 2018, Dittmann took over the position of Brexit coordinator in the Foreign Office in Berlin from Peter Ptassek.
