Ekström, who starts for the Garphyttans If, took part in the Cross-Country Scandinavian Cup for the first time in January 2012 and finished 110th in the sprint. His best result at the European Youth Olympic Winter Festival 2013 in Predeal was fifth place over 7.5 km classic. At the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships 2015 in Almaty , he achieved tenth place in the skiathlon , sixth place over 10 km freestyle and fifth place with the relay. He made his debut in the World Cup in Östersund in February 2015 and finished 68th in the 15 km freestyle. He made his second appearance in the World Cup in December 2016 in Davos . With the 28th place in the 30 km freestyle he got his first World Cup points. He finished the Tour de Ski 2016/17 in 32nd place. At the U23 World Championships in 2017 in Soldier Hollow , he finished 19th in the 15 km freestyle, 13th place in the skiathlon and 12th place in the sprint.
