Axel Anders Theodor Hägerström (born September 6, 1868 in the parish of Vireda, parish of Aneby ; † July 7, 1939 in Uppsala ) was a Swedish philosopher who is best known for his legal philosophical views.

Life

Hägerström was born in Vireda. First he studied theology at Uppsala University , but broke off this course within a year in favor of studying philosophy. He lacked money; he could barely get by with the help of teaching. After completing his studies, he became a lecturer and then, until his retirement in 1933, professor of practical philosophy at Uppsala University.

Conceptions

Hägerström thinks that moral evaluations are neither true nor false; Such judgments are only about emotions. This point of view is similar to that presented by the representatives of emotivism . In his opinion, there are no objective values, just as there is no free will. Regarding legal philosophy, Hägerström says that legal ideas are largely metaphysical and magical, which for him means that they are absurd. His influence on the thinking of Alf Ross , Karl Olivecrona and Anders Vilhelm Lundstedt , and therefore on the development of legal realism, is great.

The German sociologist Theodor Geiger follows the "Uppsala School" in its analysis of the emergence of value judgments , but, in contrast to Hägerström, characterizes them as ideology because of their epistemological character .
