Henrik Axel Kulle (born March 22, 1846 in Lund , † February 27, 1908 in Stockholm ) was a Swedish painter . He was the brother of the painters Nils Jakob Kulle (1838–1898) and Sven Servatius Kulle (1860–1945).

Artistic career

After studying at the Stockholm Art Academy (1865–1872) and returning to Lund (1873), he took private lessons from 1875 to 1880 with Ferdinand Fagerlin in Düsseldorf . Fagerlin was also a Swedish painter who studied painting with Karl Ferdinand Sohn at the Düsseldorf Art Academy from 1854 to 1855 and who, after staying in Thomas Couture's studio in Paris, had settled permanently in Düsseldorf.

There Kulle was influenced by the genre painting of the Düsseldorf School of Painting , in particular by the milieu portrayal in the tradition of Johann Peter Hasenclever , which is clear from his narrative group portrait The Church Council (motif from Germany) from 1877.

On the basis of a scholarship, Kulle stayed from 1880 to 1883 for further studies in Paris, where he also turned to open-air painting. This is where his painting The Return of the Prodigal Son was painted in 1882 .

Returning to Sweden, Kulle, who remained unmarried until the end of his life, continued his painting in the areas of genre and landscape, often with motifs from Skåne , portraits and still lifes. From 1885 to 1891 he gave private lessons in painting and drawing in Stockholm. Kulle taught at the Stockholm Art Academy from 1887 to 1891.
