Axel W. Persson

Axel Waldemar Persson (born June 1, 1888 in Kvidinge , Åstorp municipality , † May 7, 1951 in Uppsala ) was a Swedish classical archaeologist .

Life

Axel W. Persson studied history and archeology at Uppsala University . From 1915 he taught as a lecturer. In 1920 he was a founding member of the Vetenskapssocieteten i Lund . When the chair for archeology and history at the University of Uppsala (successor Lennart Kjellberg ) was appointed, he was acted as a candidate alongside Axel Boëthius . Eventually Persson was appointed to the chair in 1924 while Boëthius went to Rome.

Persson led excavations in the Argolis ( Asine , Dendra and Midea ) and in Asia Minor ( Mylasa and Labraunda ). He dealt with ancient topography, military and economic history and contributed to the deciphering of the Linear B writing system. As an internationally recognized archaeologist, he was invited to the University of California, Berkeley as Sather Professor in 1940 . In 1950 he was awarded the Övralid Prize.
