Ayanda Sikade

Ayanda Sikade (born January 1, 1981 in East London ) is a South African jazz musician ( drums ).

Live and act

Sikade received music lessons from the age of eight. At the age of ten he was already the drummer of the Vuka Jazz Band , which was active in the township of Mdantsane near East London. In 1996 he took part in the Grahamstown Youth Jazz Festival , where he was selected to present South African jazz in Sweden (the tour did not take place). As suggested in 1999 by Darius Brubeck at the Grahamstown Youth Festival , he took part in the jazz program of the University of Natal . Sikade was selected again to represent South Africa, this time at the IAJE's annual meeting in California. In 2004 he won a scholarship abroad.

Since then he has been part of the Johannesburg jazz scene . There he worked with many prominent South African musicians, e. B. Feya Faku , Bheki Mseleku , Robbie Jansen and Barney Rachabane . He was also a member of Royal Swazi Spa and the last band of Zim Ngqawana , with whom he also recorded two albums in Europe. Then he worked with Simphiwe Dana and with Nduduzo Makhathini , with whom he recorded several albums. Herbie Tsoaeli , Nduduzo Makhathini and the wind players Mthunzi Mvubu and Nhlanhla Mahlangu play in his own band . Since 2012 he has been a member of the Rainmakers group , which has released two albums with Bänz Oester and has performed at the Willisau Jazz Festival and Jazzahead . With Oester and Makhathini he also formed his Pyramid Trio .
