Nduduzo Makhathini

Nduduzo Makhathini (born September 24, 1982 ) is a South African jazz musician ( piano , composition ) and music producer .

Live and act

Makhathini grew up in uMgungundlovu near Pietermaritzburg in a musical environment; his mother is a singer and pianist (she gave him his first piano lessons), his father a guitarist. He became a member of the school and church choirs. In high school, he began learning jazz piano . After school he went to the Durban Institute of Technology to study music in 2001 ; In 2005 he finished his studies with a diploma.

In 2006 he performed with Marcus Wyatt , Herbie Tsoaeli , Morabo Molajele and Sydney Mnisi as the voice . Zim Ngqawana brought him into his Zimology Quartet , with whom he toured several times in Europe and North America and recorded albums. From 2009 he also belonged to Carlo Mombelli's band . He also worked with Andile Yenana , Kesivan Naidoo , Sidney Mavundla, Omagugu, Feya Faku , McCoy Mrubata , Mthunzi Mvubu and Malcolm Jiyane, Xolani Sithole and Jonathan Crossley. He also performed with Adam Glasser and Concord Nkabinde. With Shabaka Hutchings he played in Shabaka and the Ancestors (titled album in 2016).

He also produced albums such as Mbuso Khozas Zilindile , Lindiwe Maxolos Time , Tumi Mogorosis Project Elo , Sisa Sopazis Images and Figures or Thandiswa Mazwais Belede . He is married to the singer Omagugu Makhathini.

Prizes and awards

In 2015 he won the Standard Bank Young Artist Award for best South African jazz musician. In April 2016 he was artist in residence in the musicians' residence in Basel and performed with Swiss musicians in the Umgidi Trio.
