Kesivan Naidoo

Kesivan Dev Naidoo (born June 25, 1979 in East London , Cape Province ) is a South African jazz musician ( drums , percussion , composition ).

Live and act

Naidoo was interested in jazz at the age of ten; a year later he began playing the drums to play professionally at the age of 14, first at the Hogsback Arts Festival in the Alan Webster quintet, then the Hudson Park Jazz Band and the Hudson Concert Band , with which he also performed in Europe. He has also been a member of the Hotep Galeta trio since 1996 . He took lessons from Lulu Gontsana. As one of the first non-white students at an educational institution previously reserved for whites, he was also influenced by Grungerock in the 1990s . In 2002 he completed his Bachelor of Music at the University of Cape Town with distinction . He also played in the National Youth Big Band . After studying with the sitar virtuoso Sanjoy Banbopadhyay in India , he completed his master's degree as a tabla and percussion player.

Naidoo worked with musicians such as Miriam Makeba , Bheki Mseleku , Zim Ngqawana , Feya Faku , René McLean , Jimmy Dludlu , Judith Sepumba, Carlo Mombelli , Marcus Wyatt , Jack van Poll or Winston Mankunku , but also with Dave Liebman , Danilo Perez , Joe Lovano , John Patitucci , Tarus Mateen and Maria Schneider . He also played in bands like Tribe and Closet Snare .

In 2010 he presented his debut album with his own band The Lights , which was followed by Brotherhood in 2014 . He has been touring internationally with Lucas Niggli's drum quartet Beat Bag Bohemia since 2006 and has released two albums on Intakt Records . He also plays with Kyle Shepherd , Shane Cooper and the Swiss Andreas Tschopp and Marc Stucky in the multinational band Skyjack .

Prizes and awards

Naidoo won the SAMRO Overseas Scholarship in 2000 . In 2001 he received the SAFTA Prize (South African Film and Television Award) for best composition in a feature film. In 2009 he was named “Standard Bank Young Artist of the Year”. His album Instigators of the Revolution was nominated for the South African Music Awards (SAMA) in 2011 .
