Buddy Wells

Buddy Wells (born October 24, 1972 ) is a South African jazz musician ( soprano and tenor saxophone , also flute , composition).

Career

Wells has been a jazz musician for almost 25 years. He first became known with the group Breakfast Included around the two singers Nomfundo Xaluva and Haydn Gardner, which was founded in 1999 and released two albums. Since 2013 he has led his own quintet, which operates from Cape Town and which includes trombonist Steven Sokuyeka, guitarist Keenan Ahrends, bassist Nick Williams and drummer Jonno Sweetman.

He also worked in the Reza Khota Quartet, Offshore Jazz Quartet, Tucan Tucan, The Frank Paco Art Ensemble, John Hassan's Hassan'adas and the Adamu Trio. He performs in a duo with the Norwegian pianist Andreas Loven and in his quartet, which is documented on the District Six album . He also played with Judith Sephuma, Moses Taiwa Molelekwa , Manu Dibango , Miriam Makeba , Bheki Mseleku , Louis Moholo , Carlo Mombelli , Victor Ntoni and Tete Mbambisa . He can also be heard on recordings by Winston Mankunku , Kyle Shepherd , Bokani Dyer , Feya Faku , Shane Cooper , Oliver Mtukudzi , Jimmy Dludlu , Musa Manzini , Marcus Wyatt , Melanie Scholtz and Jack van Poll .

Between 2000 and 2016 he performed annually at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival . He also performed regularly at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown / Makhanda and the Joy of Jazz Festival in Johannesburg . He has made several guest appearances at the North Sea Jazz Festival , but also at festivals in Scandinavia and France .
